The main reason patients experience this with suppositories, is that they don't insert the suppository far enough. First, try to insert the suppository as far as you can, so it does not stay in the immediate rectal area but in the rectal vault, which is the opening just past the rectal sphincter. This should minimize any feeling of urgency. Secondly, after inserting the suppository go directly to bed and lay down flat. Those who insert the suppository while sitting up have problems retaining it.
